Air defence radars – Insights with Jan Wielpütz at ILA Berlin
In this interview at ILA Berlin 2024, we take a closer look at the significance of ground-based air defense in modern military operations, highlighted by the Ukrainian conflict.
The German NNbS program aims to close the capability gap in short and very short-range air defense, providing crucial protection against various aerial threats, including UAVs and missiles. HENSOLDT, in collaboration with Diehl Defence and Rheinmetall Defence, contributes advanced technologies like the TRML-4D radar and Spexer 2000 MkIII to the NNbS system.
Looking ahead, future air defense in Germany will integrate new technologies such as counter-UAS missiles and high-energy laser weapons, all linked to NATO's integrated defense network for enhanced situational awareness and protection.

Fairly impressive system, bit slow and outdated. Nevertheless still very nice system. If I may, don't fall into same bs as others did. "Passive" radar is not an instant miracle. Impressive feat of technology for sure. But I just don't get the overblown marketing.

Love the mechanical scanning mechanism. Could not the aperture have been slightly larger if the array didn't have the ability to point forward? If the entire radar could only turn around the longitudinal axis the beam could be narrower.
Interesting question! The effect of a slightly larger aperture is correct, but really minimal. There are other aspects with a higher influence on the antenna beamwidth and radar/aircraft performance: The antenna beam of an AESA widens when the beam is steered to the side. Additionally the Radar Cross Section of the Antenna is extremely high in boresight direction and has to be kept in mind. And as an overall A/C aspect you have also to consider spatial radar coverage when the aircraft manouvers.
Amazing. But it depends on other signals being there, which might not always be the case. I wonder if this system can also make use of jammer signals, own and foreign. I hope Western forces are equipped with enough of these and more.

Well, classic, monostatic radars make sense where no multistatic setup is possible. Also, there are enough scenarios where the value of having an active radar with very special capabilities easily outweighs the downsides of being vulnerable due to the own transmitter. Nevertheless, we agree: When there is a chance for exploiting broadcast transmitters it would be weird not to consider passive radar technology.
@@HENSOLDT "monostatic radars" will become more vulnerable over time with new loitering drones, Ukraine has demonstrated that cheap drones can do serious harm, the trick I suspect is going to be making a distributed/dispersed "monostatic radar" to mitigate this

Hensoldt needs to get more involve in the weapons, smart amunnition and heavy missiles thecnology like kits for rocket artillery Europe will need very soon to get a new MRLS to retire the M270 and a huge numbers will be needed more than 100.000 rocket artillery and Hensoldt needs to be in the guided munition field, laser thecnology and optronics to help develop new complex military systems that will be in high demand around Europe will be a true necessity for Europe and Hensoldt needs to be involved, congratulations you guys have awesome products but think in the field of guided munitions and more advanced missile and radar thecnology that hensoldt is already develop

Thanks for your question! Depending on customer needs and distinct operational requirements, different AMPS configurations can be implemented by combining various sub-systems. Besides missile warner, laser warner or radar warner, also a DIRCM and other sub-systems are available.

Theoretically yes, but in practice this is not plug-and-play as the efficient functionality depends on the platform environment and factors like weight and size, power supply, cooling, avionics connectivity, the required mission profile, etc.
